HOLIDAY STAYCATION TIPS WITH THE KING’S DAUGHTER INN: ME TIME!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
As we round out the holiday season with New Years’ Day. My final installment of my Holiday Staycation with The King’s Daughters Inn is all about ME! (well, you too, actually) read (here, here, &here) how I shared tips on how to make the most of your staycation during the holiday and all about the great amenities at the Inn.
The King’s Daughters Inn is the perfect place for a little ‘me’ time, it’s a quiet first class hotel with the intimacy of a bed and breakfast and perfect for a busy businesswoman (and men) to get away and plan for the upcoming New Year. I remember when I worked in Corporate America and we would plan for the upcoming year with strategic planning sessions, typically done with a company retreat. Now that I am a business owner, and sole employee of my business, I adapted the same idea of strategic planning. The Inn is full of stylish, and unique charm that brings a lot of inspiration for a creative. Outside of the Parrish Suite is a beautiful mural on the lavender walls that mirror the outside of the Inn with two women dressed in beautiful 20’s garb. It tells the story of the history of the Inn.
In 1903, the Sheltering Home Circle of Durham NC, formed a local chapter of the International Order of King’s Sons and Daughters – a non-denominational Christian organization dedicated to philanthropy and education. Like other chapters across the country, their work focused on social services, intending to provide a comfortable and pleasant residence for single, older women. In addition to their fundraising efforts, Brodie Duke’s generous contribution of land across the street from Duke University (then Trinity College) and a $500 “nest egg” allowed them to establish the first King’s Daughters Home of Durham in 1911. This subsidized housing for single, aging women became so popular that they eventually outgrew their facility and began fundraising for a new, larger Home to replace the first. This time, all three Duke brothers – James B., Brodie, and Benjamin – made significant contributions to ensure the venture’s success. On New Year’s Day 1926, the King’s Daughters celebrated the opening of their second Home, the two-story Colonial (Revival) style brick building we see preserved today. While planning your New Year, take a break and have afternoon tea courtesy of the Inn. Select from a variety of loose leaf teas and gourmet coffee with delicious tea-time bites. Take time to enjoy my favorite… the sage and pumpkin biscuits.
The parlor is a beautiful sitting room to have tea or coffee and reflect on the upcoming year.

Getting away and having me time for yourself, or your business is a necessity to caring for others. Me time is something I like to not just take at the beginning of the year but through out the year. Between the sitting rooms in the deluxe suites, the parlor, or the sunroom the King’s Daughters Inn is perfect for a relaxing staycation before you get back to work!
