A few years back I had the privilege of meeting a group of beautiful and stylish women from Baltimore at New York Fashion Week at the Sheen Magazine Brunch. I was instantly drawn to their style and kindness. Carolyn Phillips has the most alluring sense of style and the most beautiful spirit! We’ve kept in touch over time and I am so excited to see her display her talents with this amazing cause using her gift of style.  The Bald Beautiful & Bold benefit was created by model Carolyn Phillips and a dedicated planning committee, to support Alyscia Cunningham’s film, I Am More Than My Hair. It takes place on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at Montgomery Park (1800 Washington Blvd, Baltimore, MD) from 5-7 p.m.  Tickets are only $25, VIP is $35 and children under 16 are free. Tickets can be purchased at Eventbrite. Interested participants unable to attend the fashion show can still support Cunningham’s fundraiser via her Fiscal Sponsor, Docs In Progress.  They are in support of $186,000 for the production cost of Cunningham’s project.

About the project

“I am not my hair, I am not this skin, I am not your expectations, I am the soul that lives within.”
India Arie

From the time we are young, girls are pressured into a set belief of beauty standards. Hair is certainly high on the list and is often labeled as our “crown and glory.” Where does this notion fit for a girl with alopecia (the partial or complete absence of hair from areas of the body where it normally grows; baldness)?

I Am More Than My Hair, is a two-part project, documentary film and coffee table book that redefines beauty standards in relation to female hairlessness and captures the stories of girls and women who’ve lost their hair due to medical conditions, as well as those who’ve cut their hair in solidarity of a loved one.

As with Alyscia’s first book Feminine Transitions, I Am More Than My Hair is art created for social good. Read One Wig Stand article about Cunningham and her project.
