Fashion in the 90s was hard… and soft. On one hand you had the hard core Karl Kani, Cross Colors, grunge-y plaid, Doc Marten hard side and on the other hand you had the baby doll dress, crop top, slip dress softer side. I was always the crop top, baggy Cross Colors with Doc Marten kind of girl. Which turns out to be a happy meld of soft and hard making the 90s hardcore grunge an alternative for girls who like fashion and comfort. This FW season I shared my hit list and as promised, I am sharing pieces from the list and how I am styling them. First up, velvet and camouflage. Together they make an interesting look for my 90s grunge look. My velvet dress is my take on the popular slip dress but only in velvet. Remember the 90s softer side was about effortless dress and combat boots, well my vintage style ankle cowboy boot is my take on a tough pair of Doc Martens– and not to mention on trend (smile). For a little bit of “April” I added a fishnet sock versus the expected fishnet stockings (probably ripped) to soften the look a little. And to top it off my trusty camouflage jacket that I love to life!!! Shop a similar one for $27 here!
Style Tips for an ALTERNATIVE to GRUNGE
ADD A DRESS. If you’re all about comfort and a pair of combat boots is what the DOC ordered, then go for it… just pair it with a dress and add soft delicate jewelry, a small purse and voila! You have an alternative to hardcore grunge that is stylish and comfortable.
A SPLASH OF PINK. I didn’t here, but you can. Hair color is all the rage on the West Coast. I met a blogger friend at NYFW and she said in LA all the girls’ hair are bight blues, purples and platinum so if you have a hardcore grunge look add a pink babydoll dress with your denim jacket and boots or clip in a few pink hair pieces.
BRAIDS & CROWNS FOR YOUR HAIR. What I did do to soften my hair look was turn to the runways. Braids and crown-like head pieces along with frilly bobby pins that help to make an ordinary hairstyle fun and decorative. I used my ribbon choker as my hair ornament and gold bobby pins for a fun girly look.
SHOW SOME SKIN. If your thinking about going grunge soften your look with a crop top with your baggy jeans, or a shorter hem line or wear a slip dress with a little leg showing (smile).
SIMPLE & SOFT MAKEUP WITH A BOLD LIP. Full on grunge make up is heavy eyes, dark hair, dark lip, dark nails… so I opted for softer eyes, a black gloss (less intense) and my black nails. When your channeling 90s grunge beauty a bold lip in a darker hue like burgundy, blue or black is a good pairing with a simple eye for a softer look.
