FAUX REAL : FAKE FASHION FINDS
Anyone can have just about anything in fashion. There’s alternatives to real textiles and real gems to make even the most discerning fashionistas happy. Everything from faux fur, to faux leather, getting the real look is possible for every fashion girl without breaking the bank or feeling guilty. The rise of fake fur and vegan leather has risen in recent years, mainly because consumers began to buy clothing with a conscience. The thought of harming animals just to look good started to change the behaviors and retailers took notice. In 2010, US President Obama signed in The Truth in Fur Labelling Act, a bill designed to close the loophole and put legal safeguards in place so consumers could make more informed purchasing decisions.
For decades fur has been seen as a luxury and a sign of fashion. If you owned a fur your were a true fashionista. But now, elegant and luxurious, faux fur is perfect for vests, stoles, jackets, cuffs, and accessories. Not only does it look just like the real deal, it’s a fraction of the cost and animal-friendly. I’m not a big fur wearer but the idea of having an animal friendly option, makes me like the idea more and more.
In my book, Are You Going To Wear That?! 365 Days of Style Tips, I share three items it is okay to wear the fake version, and that is faux fur, faux diamonds and faux leather. Faux leather is a great alternative and is becoming more and more acceptable in fashion. From shoes to jackets faux leather has many textures and shapes that make owning the faux thing, fashionable.
Here are a few tips when going FAUX
1. When it comes to faux leather, black is better and texturized is even greater! The color consistency is better with black faux leather materials, colors like brown are hard to stay consistent on the faux material making it look less expensive. The more texturized or added materials like studs, grommets, make faux leather look more expensive.
2. When it comes to faux fur texture is key. Although faux fur will never have the same look as actual fur finding the right texture is key to making a fashion statement. The more shaggier the faux fur the cheaper it will look. Look for faux fur options with soft fibers and consitent color. Be sure to take care of your faux fur, it has a tendency to mat quickly and look coarse over time.
3. Mix and match. If you can find a denim jacket with faux leather sleeves or a faux fur collar you’re in business! Mixing and matching faux fur and faux leather with other textiles gives a better appearance in quality and not to mention a budget saver.
